Heavy Periods

Many women suffer from excessive bleeding during their menstrual period. This is called menorrhagia.

The evaluation of menorrhagia can involve a pelvic exam, ultrasound, blood work and possibly a biopsy of the lining of the uterus. For many women the cause of their heavy periods can be detected with these studies and a plan fr treatment of this problem can be initiated. Treatment options can include regulation of the menstrual cycle with oral contraceptives, cyclic use of progesterone, and outpatent treatment of the uterine lining with a procedure called endometrial ablation. In some cases surgery on the uterus with removal of the source of the heavy bleeding can be accomplished. In some causes of menorrhagia a partial or complete removal of the uterus may be the appropriate choice. You and your physician will work together on developing and implementing your plan for regaining control of the bleeding problem.
