By Elizabeth Braun, MS, RD

With spring fever in the air, it may be a good time to renew your New Year’s resolutions, especially those related to good health. Just like cleaning out the closets after a long, dreary winter, revitalizing your body with a few wellness-promoting nutrition adjustments may be just what is needed to welcome a new season. Clean eating is the new buzz word, but don’t get the wrong idea — no detox diets or extreme eating are required.

By Robyn Hubbard, MD

"Did you know that there is a wildly successful off-Broadway musical called "Menopause the Musical," where two hours of comedic song and dance focus on a woman's change of life? I saw it with my Mom in New York, and every woman in the theater over 50 was rolling with laughter! Now, I have to admit that I have not yet gone through menopause. But, as a practicing gynecologist, I will rely on my experiences with patients, friends, and even my Mom to help you understand more about the emotional changes that can come with menopause..."

By Robyn Hubbard, MD

"When I was pregnant and found out that I was having a girl, I was really excited. I imagined pink dresses, pretty hats, and ballet lessons. What I hadn’t considered was that she was going to grow up and go through puberty. Now, I have a wonderful eleven-year old daughter, just starting on the amazing rollercoaster called puberty. Because of this transition, I now have to talk to her about a lot of things. First, we tackled the earliest signs of puberty: breast buds! Then came more questions about body changes like body odor, hair growth in new places, and growth spurts. We have also talked about starting her period. In fact, I was asked to talk to all the fifth-grade girls at her elementary school about starting their periods, because it is so important to understand what it is and to not have it happen without knowing. My Mom said she was caught off guard when her period started; she had no clue that it was coming, and she thought she was bleeding to death.

by Adam Blickley, MD

Pregnancy is among a woman’s most life-changing events, both physically and emotionally. As a parent prepares for a newborn, a woman’s health before pregnancy should be addressed. The overall health of a woman prior to pregnancy can influence the ease of pregnancy, the maternal risks, and the health of her child. Since only about half of all pregnancies are actually planned, staying fit and healthy even before can lead to a healthier and happier pregnancy.

It seems like one of the few things that must be done every year: update the Christmas list, pay taxes . . . get a Pap smear. In the last 10 years there have been several changes in how we, your doctors, screen for cervical cancer. The main reason for that Pap smear is to detect changes in the cervix that can lead to cervical cancer, and because of the common use of the Pap, the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States has been cut nearly in half.

While the birth of a new baby is an amazing miracle, there are some pretty dramatic physical and mental challenges we face as new moms.

By Rod Taber, MD

"Vitamin D is a “fat soluble” vitamin also known as calciferol. The human body stores this essential vitamin which comes from two known sources. The first is a form of vitamin D in our skin, which when exposed to sunlight, is converted to vitamin D3, or cholecarciferol. In
addition to the production in the skin, we are also able to absorb vitamin D as part of our diet in foods such as fortified milk, fatty fish, cod-liver oil, as well as a very small amount found in eggs.

By Anita VanDeBurg, MD

Breast cancer screening has become a hot topic of debate in the past year.

By Jeffrey Frank, MD

"There I was pounding along the treadmill at the gym, music blaring through my iPhone, when I felt a tap on my arm. As I paused the music and slowed the treadmill, my old friend asked me, “What are you doing – trying to get young?” I answered, “No, I’m trying to get old.”

It’s one thing to live a long life – it’s another to live it with good quality. We can’t stop the aging process, but we can influence it for better or worse by how we live our lives. Certainly genetic factors, accidents, injuries and plain bad luck will make a difference, but there are many ways we can take control.

By Jane Thiel, APRN, WHNP-BC

“Help, I’m having a meltdown!” This seems to be a mantra of some women in their 40s and 50s. Hot flashes and night sweats are just some of the symptoms women experience when their ovaries begin producing less estrogen and may occur for months or even years before a woman’s last menstrual period.
